Airgun pellets can have different sizes. The most common ones are 4.50mm, 5.50mm, 6.35mm and 7.62mm. The production method of airgun pellet is based on swaging. Leadwire is initial material used for the production. Here the quality of the leadwire is very crucial. Mostly pure lead is used for the production. However time to time antimonial lead is also prefered. Forming the airgun pellet is made by a special mold. As MTM Machine we designed a special mold to avoid the molding sign on the pellet. The leadwire is fed into the mold, cut perfectly according to weight required and swaged by two pieces mold. After swaged airgun pellet put into a special drum. Inside the drum is coated with polyurethane to avoid any damage on pellet surface. In this step any available burr on the argun pellet is removed. Some producers also apply graphite coating.

What are the personal safety rules for operators dealing with lead?

People think that lead is poisonous. This is half true. It is only poisonous if lead is melted. The atmospheric evaporation pressure of lead material is higher than other metals. So it becomes more evaporated and more dangerous for human body when it is melted.

The operators must be careful about below rules;
*Don't drop water onto melted lead. Melted lead will explode.
*Use latex gloves. On it wear high heat resistant special gloves.
*Use mask to avoid breathing vapoured lead.
*Cover your hair. You can use hut, bandana or similar.
*Avoid breathing over melting pot or melted lead on the mold.
*Cover your skin to avoid melted lead touches and burnes.
*Give blood every six month to check the lead level in your body.

Note: Melted lead evaporates 4 times more than water. The atmosphere pressure of lead is very high. Avoid breathing lead particules. Lead as hard metal is not poisonous. But it is one of the most dense element. Even small piece of it is heavier than a standart metal, for example aluminum. Be careful by carrying.

What is buckshot and what are the sizes?

Lead ball over 4,00mm is called buckshot. But usually buckshot size is between 6,00mm and 9,70mm. Below chart shows most common sizes of buckshot with their weight.

What is the effect of antimony on leadshot production?

Leadshot is mostly used for trap shooting and hunting. As everybody knows lead is a soft metal. Ironically it is one of the most dense and heavy material but at the same time it is very soft and can be scratched by nail. If the lead is not hard enough leadshot will not crash the trap or kill the animal. So we need to get harden the lead. For that purpose we use antimony.

Antimony is an hard material and mostly used as additive. Also in leadshot production antimony is used to get harder leadshot. Mostly trap shooters prefer hard leadshot to break the trap with a few number of leadshot hit the target. It is better to use antimony for smaller size leadshots and use less level of antimony for bigger size.

Is arsenic used in production of leadshot?

Leadshot is actually lead ball which has a round form. The production of leadshot can be described as getting this round form. In its nature lead material has a tendency to get round form which makes the production of leadshot easier.

In order to increase this round form effect arsenic is one of the best additives. But the usage of arsenic is very dangerous and it is poisonous. As the lead reaches over 400 centigrad degree to be melted for leadshot, the addition of arsenic takes place in a very hot liquid form. This causes evaporation of arsenic which has enourmous negative effect on human health. That's why this application is not prefered by producers.

Eventhough such negative sides are seen the leadshot makers using tower can not give up to use arsenic in their production. The leadshot producers with machine (not tower) can avoid using arsenic.
